Oh, Plastic Festival! is a series of events held by Ocean Plastic Prevention Accelerator (SecondMuse Indonesia) to raise awareness and collaborative action in overcoming the problem of plastic pollution in Surabaya and Indonesia. The event combines creativity, the spirit of the community, and also innovation in dealing with the problem of plastic waste collaboratively. This festival has been held on 26-27 October 2019 with two locations in Surabaya namely Tunjungan Plaza Mall as the main venue and GeCo Coworking Space for the Waste Data Hackathon.
For two days straight Oh, Plastic Festival! featuring eight booths consisting of recycling businesses, startups, garbage banks, and communities engaged in plastic waste issues. The booths were: Alang-alang Zerowaste Shop, Kompis, HepiCircle, Plastic Fischer, Langgeng Jaya (Yuura Bag), Robries, Surabaya River Care, and Surabaya Main Trash Bank. In addition to the booths, we also held two public-themed public discussions. The first discussion presented the Women and Mountain community who presented their experiences implementing zero waste hiking on a mountain climbing expedition, while the second discussion presented the Pulau Plastik documentary followed by Plastic Talk, which presented five related resource persons: Pulau Plastik, Coca Cola Indonesia, Circulate Capital, East Java Province Environmental Agency, and Nol Sampah Surabaya Community. The two discussion activities were attended by around 100 participants.
Before this festival took place we also held a photography competition with the theme "Behind The Waste" which was participated by a total of 125 participants and produced six winners divided into two photo categories namely essay photography and single photo. Photos of the work of the winners we show in a photo exhibition during the festival. We also held a Plastic Robbing activity on October 21, 2019 at Taman Bungkul Surabaya Car Free Day by cooperating with teachers and students of SMAN 6 Surabaya. Around 35 students enthusiastically distributed eco-friendly tote bags to around 50 Car Free Day visitors.
At the top of the event on October 27, we announced the winners and gave prizes to the winners of the photography competition and the Hackathon competition. The festival was closed by the appearance of musicians who were known to have a strong interest in environmental issues and plastic waste, namely Blingsatan, Robi Navicula, Sisir Tanah, and Endah N Rhesa.
